Governor's Challenge Awards Recognize Statewide Law Enforcement
Departments large and small recognized for contributions to highway safety

(MACON) A total of 25 different law enforcement agencies were honored September 19 during the 19th Annual Governor's Challenge Awards program hosted by the Governor's Office of Highway Safety at the Macon Centreplex.

An annual recognition program for statewide law enforcement agencies of all sizes, the program features awards in seven different categories based on department size as well as several other specialty categories and a grand prize, the Governor's Cup, given to the top performing department among all categories.

"We look forward to this awards program every year because it gives us a chance to give our law enforcement agencies some much deserved recognition," GOHS Law Enforcement Services Director Roger Hayes said. "There is greatness in law enforcement all over Georgia, no matter how big or small the agency."

Designed to award outstanding achievements in highway safety enforcement and education, the awards recognize agencies for the approach and effectiveness of their overall highway safety programs. Agencies are evaluated not just for enforcement initiatives, but for unique problem-solving in their communities, using public information activities, and creating departmental policies that support their traffic enforcement campaign efforts.

"It's not about who wrote the most tickets," Hayes said. "It's about the men and women of these agencies taking an active role in the betterment of their communities and improving safety ontheir roads."
